Chapter 18

A New Prisoner with No Escape

Jonah struggled furiously but could find no way out of the net that held him prisoner. He hung helplessly from a branch high above the ground for some time before finally falling asleep from exhaustion.

Time passed, Jonah got some needed rest. Then suddenly, Jonah’s sleep was abruptly disturbed. The net was moving... it was being slowly lowered! Jonah awoke to a horror, as two large feathery arms roughly grabbed hold of the net with almost a crushing force. Instantly, Jonah knew his worst fears were realized... it was indeed the feathered giant who had trapped him!

The giant lifted Jonah up onto a large powerful plow horse. Tangled in a net, Jonah was dropped on the horse’s back like a large sack of potatoes. The feathered giant had captured Jonah, and rode with his prisoner behind his saddle.

Jonah was terrified as he grasped the true horror of the situation. He cringed with regret as he realized, I walked right into his trap, thinking it was totally safe just because the giant was in the rocking chair. How could I have been so stupid? His head was throbbing. Jonah’s plan had gone terribly wrong.

But as the horse trotted through the maze, Jonah was bouncing up and down on its back. And as the bouncing ride continued, Jonah thought at each quick turn in the maze that he might fall off. If I fall off, I might get chance to run, that is, if I don’t hurt myself in the fall. Finally, at one turn the horse’s bounce allowed Jonah to arch his back and slide off the horse and onto his feet. Jonah stumbled and struggled, but managed to unwrap the netting, and then ran as fast as he could without making too much noise. After a few random turns in the maze, Jonah picked up speed allowing his feet to stomp down with some noise. He could hear the horse’s trot continue farther into the distance, with the giant unaware that Jonah had fallen off. Jonah kept running blindly through the maze hoping to find the entrance to the woods, but none appeared. He also knew that if he climbed over the vineyard fencing, the giant could easily see him.

Suddenly, Jonah heard the giant’s horse start to gallop fast in his direction. The giant had discovered that his prisoner was gone. Jonah kept running and turning not knowing if he was advancing toward the woods or deeper into the maze. As the giant’s horse came within a few turns of him, Jonah spotted an unusually thick section of leafy vine. He raced for it hoping the vine’s dense leaves and the faint light of the late evening sky would prevent the giant from spotting him.

Jonah leaped into the leafy vines faster than a cat into a church on a stormy night. He froze among the leaves and held his breath knowing the giant was alarmingly close. Then he saw the horse’s legs flash by his face.
